Introduction to Gestural Similarity in Music. An Application of Category Theory to the Orchestra

2019

Mathematics, and more generally computational sciences, intervene in several aspects of music. Mathematics describes the acoustics of the sounds giving formal tools to physics, and the matter of music itself in terms of compositional structures and strategies. Mathematics can also be applied to the entire making of music, from the score to the performance, connecting compositional structures to acoustical reality of sounds. Moreover, the precise concept of gesture has a decisive role in understanding musical performance. In this paper, we apply some concepts of category theory to compare gestures of orchestral musicians, and to investigate the relationship between orchestra and conductor, a…

Multi-sensory approaches to (audio) describing the visual arts

2012

Making art accessible to blind patrons requires the ability to convey explicit and implicit visual messages through non-visual forms. Audio description is often seen as the best way to offer visual texts to blind people; however, one may query whether words alone are sufficient to convey the subtleties of art and to transport the emotional charge such works offer. It is a fact that the dialogue between words and touch may allow these particular “readers” to “see” art in its tangible forms, but perhaps more is needed if one is to give them the opportunity to live the art experience to the full. This article discusses different multi-sensory approaches to making art available to visually impa…

Museums as disseminators of niche knowledge: Universality in accessibility for all

2019

Accessibility has faced several challenges within audiovisual translation Studies and gained great opportunities for its establishment as a methodologically and theoretically well-founded discipline. Initially conceived as a set of services and practices that provides access to audiovisual media content for persons with sensory impairment, today accessibility can be viewed as a concept involving more and more universality thanks to its contribution to the dissemination of audiovisual products on the topic of marginalisation. Against this theoretical backdrop, accessibility is scrutinised from the perspective of aesthetics of migration and minorities within the field of the visual arts in mu…

Forecasting future trajectories for immersive journalism

2021

In this book we have critically explored the emerging practices of immersive journalism. In the news business, experimenting with new forms of storytelling has become the new normal. After spending a decade to get familiar with simple virtual reality tools, however, the future of immersive journalism is still considered uncertain. Immersive storytelling appears to become more concentrated on special events and locations. Journalistic virtual reality skills are increasingly crafted away from the newsrooms by small and specialized subcontractors. Sponsoring VR by the big tech companies tends to diminish in parallel with a growing move towards augmented reality investments. peerReviewed

Digital Spaces of Collaboration in Aesthetic Counter Narratives: Hamedullah. The Road Home and The Mirror Project

2020

Based on Margaret Somers’s senses of narrative and narrativity by means of which “we constitute our social identities (1992: 600), this study focuses on the scrutiny of two digital “subversive” aesthetic products, namely, British filmmaker Sue Clayton’s documentary Hamedullah. The Road Home (2012) and German philosopher Kevin McElvaney’s The Mirror Project (2017), with the objective of highlighting how the unfolding of verbal and visual narratives can be treated as the principle and “inescapable” (Baker 2006: 9) mode by means of which marginalised subjectivities “experience the world” (Baker 2006: 9) and can render it familiar to the Western gaze. The narratives revealed by the Afghan boy, …

Painting the United States’ Civil War: Or creating a Brotherly War

2015

This article seeks to illustrate Benedict Anderson’s theory of the “Reassurance of Fratricide” and “the act of remembering/forgetting” through depictions of the Civil War in US fine arts. This is mostly done through the Smithsonian art data base and the paintings referenced under the label Civil War, spanning from the 1860s to the 1890s. This paper first analyzes how these paintings were used to depict the Confederate soldier’s otherness as typically American and thus helped with the post-war reintegration of the Confederacy. This study then examines how in certain paintings the war was brought inside the realm of domesticity and family, which reinforced the idea of a fratricide and a famil…

Translating Migration in the Visual Arts: Calais Children and Project#RefugeeCameras as Collaborative Counter Narratives

2019

This study investigates the modalities through which the migrant crisis is portrayed in the creative artistic sector while accelerating the spread of political participatory and activist movements in the areas of subtitling and amateur translation. Participation and activism have stimulated the sphere of translation that has been acting as an important stimulus for the international mushrooming of artistic creativities on public spaces and digital platforms, and also for a different political and cultural reframing of the migrant crisis. 21 st -century mobility has made translation a crucial device for the negotiation of linguacultural transactions within cultural institutions, public space…

Exploring the immersive journalism landscape

2021

Current drivers of 360-degree journalism have been mostly curious about the new medium, its possibilities, and are exploring business opportunities. The early adoption of such technology is often a matter of brand-building – that is, news organizations experimenting with virtual reality (VR) want to demonstrate that their digital strategies are forward-thinking (Watson 2017). After interviewing representatives from leading US newspapers, Bosworth and Sarah (2019, 226) also conclude, “among major media companies that failing to experiment in immersive and experimental stories will mean losing a race”. peerReviewed
